Do I Need to Hire an Attorney?
If you have been arrested or charged with a crime or you are being sued, it is always best to be represented by counsel. It is not impossible for someone to represent themselves, just like it is not impossible for someone to try and stitch up a severe cut, but obviously its not a wise move. Even lawyers that get in trouble hire lawyers to represent them. That's because as the saying goes if you represent yourself you have a fool for a client.
Take a look at what is at risk when you are looking to hire an attorney. Obviously, if your freedoms are at stake you want to hire an attorney with the experience in criminal defense. I am not saying you will need an attorney in every circumstance. In fact if you get an ordinary parking ticket, I would tell you either pay it or represent yourself before the magistrate. If however, you are looking at a situation where you could get a possible jail sentence then that should be taken extremely serious and should be addressed accordingly, by hiring an experienced criminal defense attorney.
An attorney could save you time in and money by representing your interests in a court of law. Make sure when you do hire an attorney you research the experience he/she has to get the results you are looking for in your case. Don't just rely on their assertions that they have trial experience, ask them how many trials and what type of trial jury or non-jury. Additionally, ask them how long they have been practicing and if they have handled other matters similar to yours.
An experienced attorney knows the law and how to use it for your benefit.
